Family and Friends of Coach Eric Illjes
The Eric Illjes Memorial Scholarship honors the remarkable life and lasting legacy of Eric Illjes — U.S. Army veteran, accomplished scientist, dedicated coach, and beloved mentor. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1946, Eric earned a degree in Marine Ecology from Cornell University before serving in Vietnam in the U.S. Army Casualty and Medivac Division. In 1993, he brought his love of volleyball to Stockton University, first as an assistant coach and then as head coach from 1999–2005. Under his leadership, Stockton volleyball achieved unprecedented success, including three NJAC Coach of the Year awards, multiple championships, and the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearances and victory. Known for his warm smile, tireless encouragement, and commitment to his players’ growth on and off the court, Eric was a mentor and friend whose impact is still felt today.. This scholarship was created by Jennifer Illjes and Jerry Hall & Theodore and Carolyn Illjes, with their intent that the scholarship be awarded to students pursuing a degree in Marine Science.
